Modern Sculpture and Its (Silent) Dialogue with Antiquity: The Forms of Christos Kapralos

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania invites you to the Archaeological Museum of Chania on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 18:30, for the event Modern Sculpture and Its (Silent) Dialogue with Antiquity: The Forms of Christos Kapralos.
The event is held within the framework of the temporary exhibition Desmoi Technis / ArTies. 8 contemporary sculptures – ∞ timeless bonds, and unfolds as a diptych: on the one hand, through the presentations of Dimitris Andreadakis and Dimitris Angelatos on the sculptures of Christos Kapralos; and on the other, through a thematically related guided tour of the exhibition.

The initiative Desmoi Technis / ArTies unfolds, in this exhibition, the spatial and temporal threads that weave the cultural continuum of contemporary artistic creation with the iconographic richness of antiquity. These threads are deeply inscribed in the eight contemporary sculptures by Giannoulis Chalepas, Bella Raftopoulou, Christos Kapralos, and Frosso Efthymiadi-Menegaki.

The eight sculptures are distributed within the exhibition space so as to compose, in a spiral configuration, an autonomous display that is embedded within the permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Chania. In doing so, they form networks of spatial arrangements and open up new loci of encounter.
This embedding—conceived as a spatial unfolding—maps the dynamic potentials arising from the intense, dialogical coexistence of ancient and contemporary works, while simultaneously shaping the Museum as a theatrical stage capable of generating conditions for a performative interaction between artworks and visitors.

Within these conditions of interaction, visitors are invited to encounter, at close range, the accomplished artistic forms and to “listen” to the onstage silent dialogue between ancient and contemporary creations.
The presentations by Dimitris Andreadakis and Dimitris Angelatos on the sculptures of Christos Kapralos are attuned to this dialogue and to the resonant “utterances” addressed by the works both to their ancient counterparts and to contemporary viewers—utterances about the human condition and the intense experiences of body and soul.

Dimitris Angelatos

Department of Philology – School of Philosophy, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
