Visiting the Archaeological Museum of Chania
The Archaeological Museum of Chania is located in the historic suburb of Chalepa, on a plot of land covering 11,526.81 m2, with a total area of approximately 6,000 m2. Its location, averaging 98 m above sea level, offers a magnificent view over much of the city, especially the seafront. The Museum, designed by architect Theofanis Bobotis and partners, is composed of two distinct linear monolithic masses rising from the earth, a symbolic reference to the vestiges of civilisation beneath the surface.
The permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Chania is set out in three galleries on the ground floor, presenting the archaeological riches of the regional unit of Chania from the first traces of human presence in Chania to the 4th century AD, and a gallery on the upper floor where part of the Konstantinos, Marika and Kyriakos Mitsotakis Collection is exhibited.
The exhibition is enriched with faithful reconstructions of various spaces, visual media, digital presentations, tactile exhibits (copies of ancient objects) accompanied by Braille captions, and an audio guide.
The Temporary Exhibition Gallery and the Museum gift shop are on the ground floor, while the Educational Programme Room, the Amphitheatre and the Café are on the upper floor.

Free admission:
- Children aged 5 or under from non-EU member states, on presentation of a passport to confirm age and nationality.
- Greek students aged over 25 in secondary school (evening schools, Second Chance Schools, Vocational Lyceums) and vocational schools (OAED Vocational Schools) from EU and European Economic Area member states, on presentation of a school certificate stating the duration of studies.
- Teachers and professors escorting primary, secondary and tertiary education visits from EU and European Economic Area member states.
- Members of households participating in the Social Solidarity Income (KEA) programme, on presentation of an ID Card and certificate of entitlement to free admission due to participation in the KEA programme, for the stated period of participation, and of a valid certificate for dependents.
- Greek unemployment card holders, on presentation of an ID card and valid certificate of unemployment or recent renewal of unemployment.
- Persons with disabilities and one carer (the latter if the disability is 67% or over), regardless of country of origin, on presentation of an ID card or passport and a Unified Social Security Fund (EFKA) certificate of disability (issued by the Disability Certification Centre – KEPA) for Greek citizens, or an equivalent certificate for non-Greek citizens.
- Greek parents of large families (over 4 children) until their children have reached the age of 25 or regardless of age if they have disabilities, on presentation of an ID card and a valid large family status certificate issued by the Supreme Confederation of Multi-child Parents of Greece (ASPE) and a Unified Social Security Fund (EFKA) certificate of disability (issued by the Disability Certification Centre – KEPA) if applicable.
- Greek single parents until their children have reached the age of 25 or regardless of age if they have disabilities, upon presentation of an ID card and a family situation certificate issued by the Municipality, and a Unified Social Security Fund (EFKA) certificate of disability (issued by the Disability Certification Centre – KEPA) if applicable.
- Refugees, on presentation of an International Protection Applicant Card or a Travel Document under the Convention on the Status of Refugees of 28 July 1951 (recognised refugee passport) or a Foreign National’s Travel Document (recognised beneficiary of subsidiary protection passport) or a Residence Permit.
- Individuals completing their military service, on presentation of a valid military ID card.
- Greek Olympic champions, on presentation of an ID card and a Hellenic Olympic Champions Association membership card.
- Official guests of the Greek State, by request of the relevant Ministry (Protocol Bureau), with the authorisation of the Directorate General of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage.
- International Council of Museums (ICOM) and International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) card holders, on presentation of an ID card or passport and a valid ICOM/ICOMOS card.
- Members of Friends of Archaeological Sites and Museums Societies and Associations, which belong to the public sector and are managed by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, on presentation of a valid membership card.
- Current employees of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Cultural Resources Management and Development Organisation (formerly TAP), the Acropolis Museum and the Kanellopoulos Museum, on presentation of their staff ID.
- Specialist scientists with permission to photograph, study, draw or publish antiquities, on presentation of the relevant permit.
- Members of the Greek Chamber of Fine Arts, on presentation of a valid membership card.
- Greek tour guides, on presentation of a valid professional ID card, and students of the Tourist Guide Schools of the Ministry of Tourism, on presentation of their student ID.
- Journalists, on presentation of a valid press card.
- Free Entrance Pass holders on presentation of the Pass.
- Members of the Association of Greek Art Historians, on presentation of a valid membership card.
- Greek parents of families with three children until their children have reached the age of 25 or regardless of age if they have disabilities, upon presentation of an ID card and a family situation certificate issued by the Municipality, and a Unified Social Security Fund (EFKA) certificate of disability (issued by the Disability Certification Centre – KEPA) if applicable.
The following are eligible for three-year renewable Free Entrance Passes issued by the appropriate services of the Ministry of Culture and Sports:
- Copy of university degree (for graduates) or
- Certificate from an educational institution (for teachers and professors) or
- Any document proving the person’s status (for other persons mentioned above).
- Photocopy of ID card or passport.
- Recent colour photograph (ID type).
- Completion and submission of an application form accompanied by the appropriate supporting documents, at the offices of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania, Vardinoyannis Stoa, 4th floor (Nikolaou Plastira and Apokoronou St., Chania city centre)

The Museum Amphitheatre has cutting-edge audiovisual equipment. It has seating for 122 people (including 3 seats for people with disabilities and 2 seats for their carers).
The Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development (H.O.C.RE.D.) gift shop in the Museum offers cards, slides, exhibition catalogues and other museum publications, museum copies, posters, etc.

Visiting Rules
In order to ensure the safety of visitors, staff, the exhibits and the building in general, you are kindly requested to:
Leave any bulky items (including luggage) measuring over 40x40x20 cm and sports equipment (tennis rackets, etc.) in the cloakroom.
Do not bring objects dangerous to the safety of visitors and public health and safety into the Museum.
Do not eat or drink except in the areas of the Museum reserved for this purpose.
Do not bring pets into the Museum except guide dogs and service dogs.
Keep your mobile phone on silent mode while touring the Museum galleries.
Smoking and vaping are not permitted inside the Museum
E-ticket holders, pregnant women, people with disabilities and people with reduced mobility have priority access to the Museum.

Photographing antiquities is permitted with amateur equipment, without flash, as long as the photographs are not used for professional purposes.

Photographing and filming persons inside the Museum is permitted, provided that the character of the monuments is not affected or compromised and the proper functioning of the Museum is not impeded (Government Gazette 2812/Β/04.07.2019 article 2, para. ΙΙ, subparas β,δ).

Permits for professional photography, filming or videography in the Museum for commercial or other purposes are issued on payment of a fee to the Cultural Resources Management and Development Organisation (ODAP).
