The Archaeological Museum of Chania at MuCEM - "La Chambre d'amis"

The Archaeological Museum of Chania, just before it welcomes the public in its new premises, is shown in the special exhibition space "Chambre d'amis" (Room of Friends) of the Museum of European and Mediterranean Cultures (MuCEM | Marseille).

Thirteen representative objects from the collections of the Museum of Chania will be presented to illustrate aspects of the social, religious and cultural life of the people who lived in the Chania region from the 2nd millennium BC to Roman times.

The exhibition starts with the minotaur, the emblematic figure of Minoan religion, and continues with hybrid beings, ritual and apotropaic figures, followed by the skull-bearing warrior and the guitarist. He moves on to utensils and jewellery for care and grooming, and into the world of the child through a clay funerary toy. It concludes with the figurine of the mourner expressing the pain of death, returning to the figure of the bull - which dominates the cultures that flourished in Crete, but also to deities such as Aphrodite, Artemis and the figurine of Eros.
