Information about the orchestra
The New York Youth Symphony Orchestra (NYYS) stands out as one of the most distinguished youth orchestras in the United States. Its accomplishments are numerous, including a major Grammy Award in 2022 for Best Orchestral Performance. Founded in 1963, the orchestra was established to showcase the talents of New York's most gifted young musicians, ages 12 to 22. Over the decades, its activities have expanded beyond orchestral music to include programs in chamber music, orchestral conducting, composition, jazz and theatre music writing. NYYS performances take place in major venues such as Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center. NYYS has a notable commissioning program, the Jon Deak First Music Program, through which it has commissioned over 170 works by young composers since 1984.
Andrew J. Kim, a conductor who recently received the Solti Foundation's 2024 Career Assistance Award, began his role as music director of NYYS in the fall of 2023. Kim is known for his passionate and joyful approach to music, seeking to create exceptional musical experiences and foster a vibrant musical community. In his role at NYYS, he works with talented young musicians to perform major repertoire and premieres works by young American composers at Carnegie Hall.
In addition, he is dedicated to training the next generation of conductors through the Robert L. Poster Apprentice Conducting Program. Kim's conducting experience spans several orchestras both in the United States and internationally, including the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. He has also participated in major music festivals and workshops, including the Conductor's Workshop at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and the PRISMA Festival in Powell River, Canada. In addition, he teaches at the Conducting Institute, a comprehensive orchestra conducting training program under the direction of his mentor Miguel Harth-Bedoya.
Violinist Jennifer Ahn, another important person associated with NYYS, began her career as a soloist at age 11 with the Omaha Symphony and has since built a distinguished international career. Based in New York City, Ahn has performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Music Academy of the West, and has participated in major music festivals and institutions such as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Heifetz International Institute, and the Pacific Music Festival. Her work in community outreach includes performances for various programs and teaching roles, including a position as a Guest Artist-Faculty at the Omaha Conservatory of Music (OCM) Summer Institute, where she will return in 2024. Many of her students have achieved significant distinction, winning competitions and securing admissions to pre-university programs, summer festivals, and ultimately pursuing music careers in higher education.
Ahn received her degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied under the tutelage of Pinchas Zukerman and Patinka Kopec, and worked as a teaching assistant. Currently, she serves as NYYS orchestra director and teaching artist with New York Pops, while maintaining a private teaching studio.
The combination of Andrew J. Kim's leadership and Jennifer Ahn's performance and teaching talents contribute significantly to NYYS' mission of cultivating new musical talent and creating a vibrant musical community. Through their efforts, NYYS continues to maintain its reputation as a premier institution for young musicians, offering them exceptional opportunities for growth, performance and professional development.
